Murcott & Campbell Co.
14 inch mill file
Murcott & Campbell Co. was a file maker in Manhattan and at 296 Union Ave., Brooklyn, NY. According to 1913 Congressional testimony, they were the largest US file maker at the time that cut files by hand. Heller Brothers Co. bought Murcott & Campbell Co. in 1944. I do not know if Heller continued making files with the Murcott & Campbell name.
My great great grandfather was John Murcott and my great grandfather was Patrick Campbell, the founders of this company. I only heard of the business from my father (and we had some files in our house as a kid). I've recently begun to do research to see what I could learn about it. Thanks for sharing these images!
Hello cousin, Another descendant here. John Murcott and Patrick Campbell were my great (x3) grandfathers. I heard stories about this business from my grandfather when I was a child. Thank you Mark for sharing this history.
My Father was Joel Murcott, my Grand Father was John Murcott---passed late 50's, early 60's. I am trying to find out if his father was also named John?
David Campbell, your father would have been my mother's cousin David Campbell. He was a teacher. And was from a family of nine six boys and three daughters. If this is accurate please feel free to contact me by email. Kim@zinganet.com
My grandmother 's father was John Murcott's brother. Instead of going to Brooklyn he came to Philadelphia in 1870's where he manufactured stockings. She told me about her cousins in New York. I'm 70 and recently came across a piece of paper on which I wrote Murcott and Campbell File Company when I was a kid listening to her stories. Finally did the research. It's cool to know I have more family out there. 👋 Hello
Had just written that my grandmother's father was brother to John Murcott, but after checking the family Bible it was my grandmother's mother, Jennie, who was daughter of John and Caroline Murcott. His obit has always warmed my heart "...kind and indulgent to all and was worthy of the respect he recieved...". It is a much longer obit than the one in the blog. The info of Jennie comes from Caroline's obit. With 5 sons and 3 daughters there are a lot of us around!

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know for sure when the Murcott Campbell stamp stopped being used?
